Building Our Future!
We are thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter for our Sangha family with the upcoming launch of our new building project. Designed to better serve our growing congregation and local neighborhood, this new space will expand our capacity for Buddhist studies, provide a versatile community room for events, classes, and programs, and create a welcoming, modern environment for fellowship. Our goal is to build a facility that supports both our current and future generations, allowing us to deepen our roots and extend our reach. Construction is scheduled to begin next year.

The Project
Why Build a New Social Hall?
The current “Sangha Hall”, site of a defunct business that LBBC had the opportunity to purchase decades ago, awkwardly splits our property virtually in half. Inside the compromised space, which currently houses much of our storage and food-preparation equipment, both the structure and equipment have become dangerously worn and outdated, and would certainly never pass a health inspection. It also makes our parking situation problematic, with only a narrow, hazardous walkway connecting the two parking areas.
The Solution
The design focuses on two elements:
1) Update and condense all cooking operations into a single, modernized kitchen already in the back of the Hondo (main church building);
2) Erect a new Social Hall building that can act as a proper meeting space with dedicated storage and ADA-compliant restroom facilities.
By positioning the new Hall on the property as the City of Long Beach requires, it will also allow us to finally have a unified parking area, able to accommodate more vehicles with improved flow for things like funerals, weddings, classes, our Obon Festival, and other yet-to-be-imagined events.

The Plan
The project will be undertaken in three stages:
1) Remodel and re-equip the current Hondo kitchen to accommodate modern safety and health standards while maintaining current or better capacity;
2) Demolition of the current Sangha Hall building, resurfacing the parking lot, and laying the foundation and utilities for the new building;
3) Erecting the new building, finishing the interior, and replacing outdated fencing and security.
How You Can Help
We are asking for assistance in a number of ways:
1) Your time and skills at finish-work parties like drywall, painting, gardening, etc.;
2) Moving and storage of various staged items like kitchen equipment, cabinets, and the like;
3) Your donations of tangible items from our wish list;
4) Most importantly, donations of funds to pay for equipment and services to complete the project. You can earmark it to purchase specific items, pledge a dedicated amount to the general building fund recurring monthly or yearly, or make a single donation.
